Tauer’s SuperValu: A five-star rating for Carlson & Stewart

If he could give Carlson & Stewart Refrigeration (CSR) a rating, Paul Tauer, co-owner of Tauer’s SuperValu in Springfield, MN, says he would give CSR five stars in every area from workmanship to service.

"CSR is a very successful company that does business in a small-town, handshake sort of way," says Tauer, who owns the store with his brother, George. CSR has worked with Tauer’s since 1988, and was integral in upgrading all of Tauer’s refrigeration when the store underwent a major remodel seven years ago.

Saving the green

Tauer’s is a third-generation grocery store in a small town. That means it has to consistently provide exceptional experience to retain customers, while also looking for ways to control costs.

Energy costs, of course, are always threat to the store’s bottom line. CSR has helped Tauer’s meet the challenge.

"CSR visited our site, suggested we invest in some energy-saving equipment, and crunched some numbers to show us what we would save," says Tauer. "And they were spot on."

Since then, CSR has retrofitted Tauer’s with more efficient freezer door lighting, installed pull-shade case covers to prevent overnight refrigeration loss and met onsite with the local utility to ensure Tauer’s received the maximum energy-efficiency rebates possible.

"Our electricity usage is down 3-4 percent," says Paul. "And that’s significant in terms of cost."

Tauer’s also relies on the people of CSR for regular and emergency maintenance.

"We have gotten to know the service techs, and they have helped me understand how refrigeration works and to look for problems before they happen," says Tauer. "They always make good use of their time onsite - and actually minimize the need for their own service."
